Sunrise at the Tulip Festival

For me, Family Photography sessions are all about capturing a moment in time. It’s not about how they look, or what they wear in and of themselves, it’s about what that says about who they ARE right now. In this moment that we never get back. In the time that is so precious because it’s spent together.

My Tulip Sunrise family braved the early morning to meet me at the breaking dawn. There was light in the sky, but the sun had not yet broken the horizon.

As the sun began to rise in the sky- the flowers began to awaken to the glorious spring.

It was a bit chilly still so I asked the family to snuggle close to stay warm.

As the baby wiped the sleep from her eyes, and they huddled close, we chatted about our family names, and how I have kids with the same names as theirs!

Sister reached out for brother, and as naturally as anything he scooped her into his arms and nuzzled in close to her soft skin for a little kiss.

He turned to his mom and asked “when do the REAL pictures start?” But my goal isn’t to force this family into a mold, it’s to walk with them, and experience their time together, capturing the images along the way. So we took a stroll through the flowers.

Mom and son found a giggly moment, with silly faces and inside jokes along side warm embraces and genuine joy.

He looks over to his sister, eyes full of love for her and wanting her close.

He pulled her in to his lap and they began singing her favorite song.

As we moved along through the fields, she took a little ride in my wagon.

And a ride in daddy’s arms.

Up the row with mama, taking care of her beautiful shoes.

We took a moment at the farm’s big pink tractor, and followed the paths of the flowers.

With another snuggle and another song, our time was winding down.

These parents have filled their family with sweet joy, laughter and delight.

It was a joy to join them, and to help them preserve this time. A brother so closely bonded with his baby sister, her precious little face, and their innocent smiles. The beauty of their delight in each other, and the tiniest moments, that are the EVERYTHING in life.

As the mother of 4- including a high schooler, middle schooler, elementary schooler, and preschooler there is never a dull moment around here. Quiet, sometimes, but never dull. Be it ordinary day revelations or dramatic Special Needs parent experiences, or living with AI and Anxiety, there is constantly a story to tell. Our world is becoming increasingly difficult to live in. We feel alone and afraid so often. We need opportunities to remember that we are all shoulder to shoulder trudging along towards the finish line. If only we could reach out to the person next to us and hold hands. If we could realize the strength in community we could help each other along. My hands are messy and shaky and rather cold at times, but this is me… reaching out
